When Itโ€™s Know-vember, Treat Your Skin with Kindness

Summer is just around the corner, the season of sun, sand, and sweat. Spring is the time to get ready for it. Keeping your skin clean is important year-round, of course, but especially meaningful in November, a transitional season.

Your impulse may be to go heavy on cleaning to rid your face of dead, dry skin cells that have developed during cold weather. The problem with this approach is that while you are ridding yourself of dry skin, you are also leaching out healthy skin oils and water. โ€œA number of factors impact how often you should cleanse your face,โ€ says Dr Austin. โ€œThe goal is to keep your skin clear and blemish-free without triggering irritation or breakouts from over-cleansing.โ€ For most people, a single- or twice-daily facial cleansing is appropriate.

Sun Time In Australia Means Sunscreen for You

Know-vember means more fun in the sun, but that isnโ€™t fun for your skin. The culprit is the sunโ€™s UV rays, which can lead to sunburn, cataracts, and skin cancer. On a good day, the UV index registers at 2. Come summer, however, and that number jumps to an unhealthy 11 throughout the country, leading to Australiaโ€™s high incidence of skin cancer.

If thatโ€™s not enough to motivate you to become besties with your sunscreen, here are more reasons for prioritising applying and re-applying sunscreen regularly in Know-vember:

  • UV levels are highest on a clear day at midday.
  • You burn fastest when the shadow you cast is shortest. (UV is high when the sun is high in the sky.)
  • UV levels are just as strong from 9am to noon as they are from noon until 3pm.
  • You may not feel UV radiation on a cooler day, but itโ€™s there. Itโ€™s there even when the sky is cloudy.

His and Hers: Skincare Knowledge for Men and Women

Have you noticed an explosion of skincare products on the market that are created for men? The interesting fact about this is there is no difference between skincare for men and skincare for women, but there is a difference in marketing. โ€œMenโ€™s skincare products tend to be more functional in terms of packaging, regimen, ingredients, lighter weight in textures with more traditional formats โ€“ gels, gel creams, lotions; and masculine in terms of sensorial cues,โ€ says The Aedition in their article on the subject.

โ€œYour skin doesn’t know what gender you are,โ€ explains Dr Austin. โ€œGender is only relevant in that hormonal fluctuations can affect skin behaviour.โ€ Hence, just as with lifestyle factors, medications and health conditions play a part in skin health and beauty. โ€œEveryone’s skin is different, and a skincare regime should be tailored to the individual not their gender,โ€ says Dr Austin.
